The Electric Department operates and maintains the electric infrastructure within Modern Electric Water Company’s service territory – from 115,000 volt transmission lines to 120/240 volt service lines at homes and businesses and everything in between. This includes the poles, cross arms, wire, substations, transformers and street lights most people associate with a utility company. This vast system requires the use of many different skills from a variety of dedicated individuals – including, linemen, metermen, engineers, supervisors and other specialized support personnel.
Modern Electric Water Company also employs advanced technology to aid in the efficient dispatch, control, operation and administration of the electric system. Notable examples include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Automated Meter Reading (AMR), Remote Disconnect/Re-connect, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and advanced communication systems to link the entire operation.
Modern Electric Water Company purchases all of its customers’ energy requirements from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) through long-term power contracts. This energy is “wheeled” to Modern’s service territory a short distance over Avista Utilities’ transmission circuits. Modern Electric does not own or operate any generation assets, but is able to take advantage of the affordable, clean hydro-power that we are so lucky to have in the Northwest. This valuable energy resource, as well as the Company’s effective administration of acquiring and providing it to its customers allows Modern Electric Water Company’s customers to enjoy some of the lowest electric rates in the area.
