Well #11 Dedication to Dr James Bourekis
On Monday, May 24, 2010, Modern Electric Water
Company held a dedication ceremony to honor past Board President Dr
James Bourekis. Dr
Bourekis served as a MEWCO Director since 1985 and as President from
2001 to his passing in October, 2009.
Under his direction as a board member, the company made many
improvements to its infrastructure.
Therefore, the dedication of Well #11, located at MEWCO’s
office complex at 904 North Pines Road, to Dr James Bourekis was a
fitting tribute for his many years of service to the company and to
our community.
The dedication ceremony centered around the unveiling of the new well house sign by Board Secretary/Treasurer Sam Waldron and General Manager Mike Baker. Vice President Dave Thompson, guest, MEWCO employees, and family members Kathy, George and Christina Bourekis were present for the ceremony. The new sign is located on Broadway just east of the Pines Road intersection.
MEWCO Reluctantly Increase Rates
Increasing wholesale power costs from Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) is the fundamental driver of this rate increase.
Effective May 1, 2010, MEWCO is increasing electric basic charge, electric rates and water basic charge by 4%. This rate increase is primarily caused by a 7% increase in wholesale power cost from BPA. Bonneville Power Administration's rate increase went into effect on October 1, 2009, but Modern chose to delay passing on this increase until after the heating season in order to reduce the impact on its customers.
The major reasons for BPA's rate increase were the increased cost of protecting salmon and steelhead impacted by the federal hydro electric power systems, and BPA's declining revenue associated with the sale of its surplus power. The new rates will add approximately $2.09 per month for the average household using 1,000 kWh and 40 cents per month for residential water service. Our customers will now be paying the same energy charges as they were in May 2007 because MEWCO actually reduced rates by 4% in April 2008.
Modern Electric Water Company is committed to keeping rates as low as possible while providing safe and reliable electric and water service to its customers. In fact, even with this rate increase, Modern's customers still enjoy the lowest electric rates in the area.
